'90s Nick is NOT All That

Now granted, I no longer have cable, and can no longer watch most good cartoons (seriously, everything on digital/analog airwaves is not really worth watching when it comes to cartoons). But, when I did watch cartoons in the 80s and 90s, it was rarely ever Nickelodeon. The only shows I remember watching were Ren & Stimpy, Doug, Inspector Gadget (didn't he come out in the 80s?), Rugrats, and Rocko's Modern Life. Those were really the only shows that interested me, and made me want to keep coming back for more. Maybe it was my age, and I found it harder to relate to these shows. But, I wonder if it was actually because I just didn't like them. Angry Beavers wasn't as good when compared to Pinky & The Brain, AAAHHH! Real Monsters didn't compare to Beetlejuice, Hey Arnold! just didn't compare to the same channel's Doug cartoon. What was really so great about Nickelodeon? Why are these shows completely overrun with reminders that the 90s were great and Nickelodeon was king? I just don't get it. I watched some of their live action shows (Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, and The Adventures of Pete and Pete) and found those to be more entertaining than their cartoons. Again, I wonder if that had to deal more with age than anything. But, I'm torn, because I remember watching plenty of other cartoons on other stations than Nickelodeon.

I also was definitely more of an 80s kid. But for most of the 80s, I lived off of Saturday Mornings and wish that there was a station that played those cartoons (Boomerang, I know you will never read this, but there are so many more possibilities than the shows you're showing...don't get me started on talking about the perfect channel. That is for another post). I grew up on He-Man, Thundercats, Silverhawks, Superfriends, Thundarr the Barbarian, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- the list could honestly go on forever.

When it comes to some of the social networking sites that I frequent, I'm in the "minority" when it comes to this subject. It's a shame, because everybody is wrong and I am right.

Nah nah. Boo boo.

  1. No. This isn't retro. This site is supposed to be about retro and nostalgia not made up stories....oh crap! wrong website!!
okay okay Since you were so kind about *cough cough* adventure time, I'll return the favor and forgive you for liking pete and pete, and thinking that pinky and the brain was better than Angry Beavers (in what universe?) You make some great points though there are not nearly enough old shows available anywhere (non bootleg anyway) and that needs to change. I could definitely go on for a bit about my perfect channel too! Lovin the blog man.

  2. Thanks for the comment! But, you're still wrong for Angry Beavers...Since it's available on Netflix, I have partaken in a few episodes, and I still wholeheartedly believe that there were far more superior cartoons on other stations than Nickelodeon.

But, you are entitled to your opinion. As long as you know you're wrong. ;)

  3. It's your website so you're opinion rules here but eventually the court of public opinion will prove me right. Viva La Beaver!
